City Breaks In Inverness, Scotland And Facts You Need To Know

Inverness, widely referred to as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland, was granted city status in the year 2001 and at the moment is the only city in the Highlands. Unusually the city has no legal boundaries which creates problems for those estimating population. The estimations are less likely to be accurate by the fact that the population of the city is sharply increasing, the city has the highest growth rate of any city in Great Britain. One thing we can say for certain is that the city has a fairly happy population, in 2008 Inverness came 5th in a survey taken, by the Telegraph.co.uk, of 189 British cities for quality of life. Therefore, I think we can safely say that Inverness is a beautiful place in which to stay for some time and this is probably one of the reasons which make the city amazingly popular with tourists. Importantly there is a great deal of bed & breakfasts in Inverness with the majority of it being bookable online.

Inverness is also often called the gateway to the Highlands of Scotland for the clear fact that it is best placed to make the most of the Highland public transport system and a large amount of tourist attractions are easy to get to. Possibly the best way to see them is by going on a tour or day trip. A few tour companies visiting places such as, Loch Ness, Urquart Castle or Culloden or for the hardy visitors you can to visit Orkney and John O’Groats in a single day. It is also possible to find a few city tours, such as the Terror Tour.

A small number of visitors choose to stay in 2 locations in the Highlands say Inverness then Fort William. The town of Fort William is very popular with sports folk especially hill walkers, rock climbers and ramblers who take their chances getting to the top of Ben Nevis which towers above the town. Similar to Inverness Fort William bed & breakfast accommodation and rather like other bed and breakfast accommodation in Scotland it is always not very expensive, superb value for money and extremely tidy, clean and comfortable with world renowned hospitality.

One important fact you should remember is that Inverness Airport is, about, seven miles east of the city at Dalcross. It is easy to catch a bus to the busy but small airport which is fairly reasonable. If you will be needing maps of Inverness then you will find them free at the tourist office, on Castle Wynd in the town center. While you are taking a city break in Inverness you should make a point to visit Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the Mercat Cross and ‘stone of tubs’ especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an enjoyable interactive experience.
